The Boat

The 49er is a 4.9 meter skiff dinghy which was chosen in 1996 to represent the skiff class at the Olympics.

This wild skiff, being the fastest of the Olympic classes was chosen because it represents the high performance direction that competitive sailing is taking and brings an exciting, high adrenaline, media friendly aspect to Olympic sailing.

The 49er is ideally suited for the team largely due to the weight requirements; a helmsman needs to be lighter and weigh around 72 kilos and the crew position to be slightly heavier at around 80 kilos. With different balances of weight and power, Seb and Benji are superbly suited to this extreme, fast and fun sailing sport.
