The 49er is a 4.9 meter skiff dinghy which was chosen in 1996 to represent the skiff class at the Olympics.
This wild skiff, being the fastest of the Olympic classes was chosen because it: a) represents the high performance direction that competitive sailing is taking. b) brings an exciting, high adrenaline, media friendly aspect to Olympic sailing
